Reading I
Romans 4:13-15, 18-19
It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham
and his descendants that he would inherit the world,
but through the righteousness that comes from faith.
For if those who adhere to the law are the heirs,
faith is null and the promise is void.
For the law produces wrath; but where there is no law,
neither is there violation.
He believed, hoping against hope, that he would become
“the father of many nations,” according to what was said,
“Thus shall your descendants be.”
He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body
as [already] dead (for he was almost a hundred years old)
and the dead womb of Sarah.
Psalm 145:10-13, 17-18
Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD,
and let your faithful ones bless you.
Let them discourse of the glory of your Kingdom
and speak of your might.
Making known to men your might
and the glorious splendor of your Kingdom.
Your Kingdom is a Kingdom for all ages,
and your dominion endures through all generations.
The LORD is just in all his ways
and holy in all his works.
The LORD is near to all who call upon him,
to all who call upon him in truth.
John 15:16-17
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,
so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.
This I command you: love one another.
Gospel
Luke 12:8-12
I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others
the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God.
But whoever denies me before others
will be denied before the angels of God.
“Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,
but the one who blasphemes against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
When they take you before synagogues and before rulers
and authorities, do not worry about how
or what your defense will be or about what you are to say.
For the holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say.”
